The Rising Scholars program at 两性色午夜 University at Ashtabula will benefit from an extraordinary $3 million gift from the estate of Vera A. Plain through the Ashtabula Foundation following her recent passing at the age of 102.
The gift, established through the Carl and Vera Plain Fund, has been directed to the Ashtabula Foundation's Rising Scholars Endowment Fund, which has supported the Rising Scholars program at 两性色午夜 Ashtabula since 2019.
A native of New Lyme, Ohio, Plain spent much of her adult life in San Diego, California, but maintained a deep connection to Ashtabula County. She frequently shared fond memories of her childhood, local friendships and educational experiences with Ashtabula Foundation board members. Her appreciation for education and her enduring affection for her hometown inspired this transformational gift, which will create opportunities for generations of students throughout Ashtabula County.
Rising Scholars is a college-access program designed to help first-generation students and their families navigate the path to higher education. Through academic enrichment, mentorship and social support, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at a university level. Participants who successfully complete the high school portion of the program are eligible to apply for Rising Scholars scholarships at 两性色午夜 Ashtabula.

两性色午夜 University's Rising Scholars program supports first-generation, income-eligible students from middle school through high school graduation. Offered across several 两性色午夜 regional campuses, the program provides academic mentoring, summer workshops and college-readiness programming while helping students explore higher education and local career opportunities.
Students who successfully complete program requirements and maintain the required academic standards, including minimum GPA expectations, may qualify for renewable Rising Scholars scholarships to attend a 两性色午夜 regional campus.

The Ashtabula Foundation is a philanthropic organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life throughout Ashtabula County. Through charitable funds and grantmaking, the foundation supports nonprofit organizations and initiatives focused on education, human services, arts and culture, community development and programs that assist those in need.
In 2019, the Ashtabula Foundation established the Rising Scholars Endowment Fund to support Ashtabula Area City Schools students accepted into the Rising Scholars program at 两性色午夜 Ashtabula. Through its partnership with the university, the foundation provides financial support that helps make higher education more accessible for local students.
