More than 300 art fans came together at the nationally distinctive ɫҹ University Museum to preview its newest exhibition, “Aimee Lee: Every Last Scrap.” This solo exhibition comes from Cleveland artist Aimee Lee and is the culmination of a multiyear process to provide 58 individual pieces for display. Each piece showcases Lee’s specialty, hanji, the Korean art of papermaking.
“‘Every Last Scrap’ really brings attention to the care that she consistently demonstrates in making use of the entire sheet of paper and all of the offcuts,” said Sara Hume, Ph.D., curator and professor at the museum. “And you can see that she works at different scales in order to make use of all of the paper. And I invite you to walk through the galleries of the exhibition and consider the rich heritage of the dresses and the limitless possibilities of paper as a material.”
Lee shared how she was feeling upon seeing the turnout of people for the exhibition’s preview event.
“I would like to not get emotional, but it’s very emotional to see all of you here with me to celebrate,” Lee said during her opening remarks. “It’s really kind of mind-blowing to think you’re all here to see this show that I’ve been working on for the last few years. It’s just so gratifying to see this beautiful patchwork of this community that I’ve built over the last 13 years after I moved here from New York. I really can’t single any one person out, but you are all part of what makes life here in Northeast Ohio so beautiful.”
