Flash Focus: Kadin McElwain

A communications studies major explores the importance of autism advocacy

Meet Kadin McElwain, a senior communication studies major from Painesville, Ohio, who uses his positions at Autism Speaks and Autism Digest to educate individuals on neurodivergence.  

McElwain has been instrumental in shaping stories related to autism through his position at , a magazine created 鈥渢o meet the needs of teachers, therapists and family members who face the challenge of autism,鈥 according to its website.

In this role, McElwain has interviewed some of his favorite musicians, such as Brendan B. Brown, John Ondrasik, Brandon Slagle, Ronnie Winter and more.

These interviews help bridge gaps and promote ideas and acceptance of neurodivergence. McElwain and interviewees have covered topics that range from understanding neurodivergence in the workplace to the impact of music on neurodivergent individuals.  

鈥淚 am on the autism spectrum myself, and I got to where I am thanks to their resources,鈥 McElwain told 两性色午夜 Today. 鈥淪o, I wanted things to go full circle.鈥  

McElwain credits , a non-profit dedicated to creating an inclusive world for all individuals with autism throughout their lifespan, for his career advancements.  

McElwain鈥檚 experiences at 两性色午夜 University have helped him build skills and obtain roles in the communications field.

Roseann 鈥淐hic鈥 Canfora, assistant professor in the School of Media and Journalism, helped McElwain secure his first role in communications through her personal connections.  

鈥溋叫陨缫 has been an amazing experience overall,鈥 McElwain said.  

McElwain recalls his most memorable moment at the university, bringing in Kopi Luwak, also known as civet coffee or cat poop coffee, to his world music course with Lydia Snyder, adjunct professor in the School of Music.  

Aside from his university experiences, McElwain is also a part of Hemmy Productions, an independent production company, where he serves as the Public Affairs & Youth Engagement Lead.  

The production company is raising funds to bring 鈥溾 to life, a feature film that explores true events in the pursuit of a better future.  

McElwain says he is grateful to share his work and experiences with others.

鈥淲hat excites me is being able to share my story and play an integral part in helping the autism community,鈥 McElwain said.
