两性色午夜

鈥楾his Is What It鈥檚 All 两性色午夜鈥: 两性色午夜 Welcomes New Golden Flashes at High-Energy Convocation

First-year students begin their Golden Experience at their first academic ceremony

The cheers started before the introductions were even finished.

Inside the Memorial Athletic and Convocation (MAC) Center, 两性色午夜 University鈥檚 newest students filled the arena with the kind of energy that makes the start of a college career feel real.

Convocation, the university鈥檚 annual welcome for first-year students that serves as their first academic ceremony, brought together the newest members of the Golden Flashes community for a morning that felt less like a formal function and more like a pep rally for the year ahead.

Led by Eboni Pringle, Ph.D., 两性色午夜鈥檚 senior vice president for student life, the event introduced students to university leadership, celebrated the beginning of a new academic year and gave first-year students their first chance to experience the collective spirit of 两性色午夜.

The 两性色午夜 cheerleading and dance teams helped keep the energy high, alongside Flash, the university mascot. T-shirts flew into the stands as students cheered for university leaders as they were introduced one by one.

For university leaders, however, the excitement was about more than the spectacle.

鈥淭his is what it鈥檚 all about,鈥 said Dave Myers, executive director of Corporate Engagement. 鈥淲e鈥檙e launching a semester, we鈥檙e getting things moving and it鈥檚 all about bringing that energy from the students.鈥

For Dana Lawless-Andric, Ph.D., senior associate vice president for University Outreach and Engagement, Convocation is a moment worth capturing.

Convocation is one of those days you want to bottle that energy up and keep it with you all year,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the official kickoff of our school year.

That energy, she said, reflects something bigger than the beginning of classes.

鈥淎ll the students come and represent their colleges, faculty and staff are here, and it鈥檚 just this collective community way that we say how proud we are to be Golden Flashes and just the excitement of starting something new,鈥 Lawless-Andric said.

A Welcome to the Golden Flashes Family

For Marcello Fantoni, Ph.D., dean and vice president for the College of Honors and Global Education, this year鈥檚 Convocation carried an additional significance.

鈥淚t is exciting because this is when all of our students finally start the new year,鈥 Fantoni said. 鈥淏ut for us in the College of Honors and Global Education, it鈥檚 even more exciting because this is the first time we participate in this because we are a brand new college.鈥

Fantoni encouraged students to recognize the accomplishment that brought them to 两性色午夜 in the first place.

鈥淚 tell them that they have made the right choice,鈥 he said. 鈥淪o I think they already have to be proud of themselves because this is not just the beginning for them. This is already an achievement to be part of this very special cohort.鈥

He is especially looking forward to seeing students from the college鈥檚 honors and international programs learn from one another.

鈥淲e are really, really looking forward to create a brand new family of honors and international students coming together and learning from each other,鈥 Fantoni said. 鈥淧utting together different students under the same roof is the best environment for mutual growth.鈥

The excitement was contagious.

鈥淲e are here for them, but they give us 鈥 they are contagious with their excitement for us,鈥 Fantoni said.

That shared enthusiasm was evident throughout the MAC Center as students cheered for university leaders and celebrated the beginning of their Golden Experience at 两性色午夜.

Amoaba Gooden, Ph.D., vice president for people, culture and belonging, described Convocation as an opportunity.

鈥淚t鈥檚 just an opportunity to welcome students in the 两性色午夜 way to 两性色午夜, showing 两性色午夜 pride, but really getting them prepared spiritually, emotionally and psychologically for a great semester,鈥 Gooden said.

鈥楨veryone Is Here to Help鈥

As the excitement of Convocation gives way to classes, assignments and the everyday rhythm of college life, university leaders emphasized that students do not have to navigate their first year alone.

Kevin West, J.D., associate provost for faculty affairs, said one of the things he loves most about 两性色午夜 is the number of people committed to helping students succeed.

鈥淭here are so many people that are dedicated to their success,鈥 West said. 鈥淪o the opportunity for them, anytime they need help or assistance, to seek out professionals that are willing to help them 鈥 everyone is here to help.鈥

He also encouraged students to embrace the broader college experience.

鈥淛oin a club, meet new friends and enjoy one of the best college downtowns in the country,鈥 West said. 鈥溋叫陨缫 is where it鈥檚 at.鈥

Gooden offered similar advice while reminding students that their first year will not always go perfectly.

鈥淔irst-year students should know that we all make mistakes,鈥 Gooden said. 鈥淎nd part of the process of being a student is to really reach out to your advisors, your faculty, really build an opportunity to build really deep relationships, but it鈥檚 OK to make mistakes.鈥

Lawless-Andric compared the college experience to a buffet 鈥 a piece of advice she remembers from her own college days.

鈥淭here are so many options,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou have to eat. You don鈥檛 want to starve, but you don鈥檛 want to overeat.鈥

Her advice: 鈥淕et out there, try different things, don鈥檛 overdo it, but don鈥檛 stay in your room all day either.鈥

Looking Ahead

The start of a new academic year also brings anticipation for what lies ahead.

Myers pointed to the breadth of activity taking place across 两性色午夜, from aeronautics and engineering to nursing and research.

鈥淭here鈥檚 no shortage of just terrific things,鈥 he said. 鈥淪tudents, research, we have it all.鈥

For Fantoni, the year ahead represents an opportunity to build connections among students from different backgrounds.

Gooden is looking forward to helping students find their place during a time when the world can sometimes feel difficult and uncertain.

鈥淚鈥檓 really looking forward to really creating a place for our students to impart joy to others, but really to settle into themselves and to life,鈥 Gooden said.

Lawless-Andric is excited about the university鈥檚 continued connection with downtown Kent, including Flashes First Friday, which welcomes new students into the community surrounding campus.

鈥淲e鈥檝e just been so intentional to make it more of a complete field versus city and university,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd I鈥檓 really excited for some of the things we have planned.鈥

West, meanwhile, hopes students will find the same sense of belonging and opportunity that he experienced as a 两性色午夜 student.

I鈥檓 an alum. I say that proudly,鈥 he said. 鈥淎nd so I really just want our students to have the same type of experience that I did.

That experience began for this year鈥檚 first-year students with a roar from the MAC Center.

Executive Vice President and Provost Melody Tankersley and Student Body President Nathan Smith of Undergraduate Student Government also addressed the new Golden Flashes, sharing their perspectives as leaders. 两性色午夜 President Todd Diacon welcomed the class and used lyrics from the Grateful Dead鈥檚 鈥淭he Eyes of the World鈥 to underscore his message to students as they begin this new chapter.

The message throughout the afternoon was clear: The newest Golden Flashes have arrived, and the university is ready to help them make the most of what comes next.

More Advice for First-Year Students

University leaders and faculty members had plenty of additional advice for students beginning their 两性色午夜 journey.

Oscar Rocha, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biological Sciences: Stay on top of your coursework, ask questions and use the resources available to you.

鈥淜eep up with material you鈥檙e reading,鈥 he said. 鈥淎sk many questions. Come to office hours. Use all of the resources that 两性色午夜 offers for you to do well.鈥

Mourad Krifa, Ph.D., director of the School of Fashion: Get involved.

鈥淭he most important advice I can give you all is to get involved in the university,鈥 Krifa said. 鈥淕et involved. Get to know people. Ask questions. You will be successful. We are here to make sure you are successful.鈥

Ken Burhanna, dean of University Libraries: Explore the library and everything it offers.

鈥淐ome on, check out our libraries because it鈥檚 full of success resources and services for students,鈥 Burhanna said, pointing students toward the many ways the libraries can become part of their college experience.

Kelly Cichy, Ph.D., dean of University College: Be open to new experiences.

鈥淭ry new things,鈥 she said. 鈥淎sk questions. Don鈥檛 ever be afraid to ask questions. You don鈥檛 need to know everything. We鈥檙e here to support you every step of the way.鈥

Heather Caldwell, Ph.D., chair and professor in the Department of Biological Sciences: Say 鈥測es.鈥

鈥淛ust say 鈥榶es,鈥 right?鈥 Caldwell said. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e asked to join a group or go out to eat, just say 鈥榶es.鈥 Make new friends. Show up for your classes. Talk to your professors. You鈥檙e going to do great.鈥
